"I don't know what you're talking about. I'm just a detective."

Born to a single mother on March 23rd, Ai Ishikawa's early life was pretty unremarkable. Well, as unremarkable as it could be with only one parent. Things were pretty normal. She went to school, she made friends and her mother made enough to live comfortably, though there were the nights where she would come home pretty late. She never told Ai what her job was. Whenever she asked, she'd either give some kind of vague answer or she'd outright avoid the question entirely. Still, Ai couldn't complain. Considering her circumstances, she had a relatively easy life, until one fateful day when her world was flipped upside down.Trigger Warning: Violence, death and bodily harm. Skip to the next picture if you are sensitive to the contents below! The day was November 5th, 2010. While on her way home from school, a ten year old Ai was suddenly snatched up by crab-like monster. The beast took her to an unfamiliar place where she was placed in a large group of other children in her age group. Hours passed as more and more kids were added to the monsters collection. Eventually, once it decided it had enough...The feast began. Before anyone could react, the creature grabbed one of the children and proceeded to eat them alive. A few minutes later, another kid was grabbed and eaten. Ai could still hear the bloody crunch of bones whenever it was another one's turn to be eaten. As the hours went on and the chance of being the next one to be chosen grew, Ai and a few other kids managed to sneak past the monster and made a run for it. They thought that once they could get out of wherever they were being held, they could find someone to help them, but something was wrong. They were in Mikage-Cho, but it was all... wrong. The city was warped and distorted and the people were replaced with monsters of all shapes and sizes. As Ai and the other escapees tried to make sense of their situation, a faceless figure clad in black leapt in from out of nowhere and cut one of the kids down with a scythe. Ai and the others ran away once again, but the scythe twirling freak quickly gave chase. Its speed was inhuman as it caught up to the girl in moments and sliced open the length of her back. At just ten years old, it seemed as though Ai's life was destined to come to an end. However, before the final blow could be struck, several gunshots rang out and the faceless monster was filled with bullets. Clinging on to her quickly fading consciousness, Ai saw what looked like a human. She couldn't make out any of their features, though. She couldn't even tell if they were a man or a woman. He had some sort of weird device that, when activated, caused another one of these monsters to appear.Just when Ai felt as though she was at the end of her rope, a warm, soothing light surrounded her and any pain she felt was gone. Her mysterious savior then summoned another creature, who made some strange gesture and, before anyone had the time to react, Ai and the two other kids she had tried to escape with suddenly fell asleep.

Ai woke up in her bed the next day. At first, she thought the event she had just lived through was nothing more than a bad dream, but the scar she found on her back, as well as the fact that she was now seeing many of those strange beasts from before was enough to tell her that what happened was real. This, understandably, terrified the then ten year old as the weight of what had happened crashed down on her all over again. If there was any silver lining to all of this, it was that at least her mother was able to help her through all of this. She seemed... strangely understanding of what she was going through.Within Mikage-Cho, the sudden disappearance of several children was labeled as a mass kidnapping. As far as Ai knew, the only survivors were her and the two others that she was with.Ai spent the next five years in and out of school. As Ai worked through everything she had survived, there were lengthy stretches of time where she didn't attend class for reasons none of her peers understood why. Whenever she was in class, her friends noticed that she wasn't that cheery, bubbly girl anymore. She was a lot less expressive now. Her smile was replaced by a blank, deadpan look, which unsettled a few people.By the time she turned fifteen, Ai had enrolled in Saint Hermelin High School, where her attendance was a lot more consistent.Despite being able to see creatures nobody around her could see, as well as the occasional nightmares reliving that fateful day, Ai's life had mostly gone back to normal. She even learned, through some form of experimentation, that many of these monsters weren't actually hostile. She couldn't understand a lick of what they were saying, sure, but they did seem to be somewhat friendly. One of them even began to follow her around. A small black cat that wore a pair of boots, a cape and a hat that carried a sword that she affectionately called "Mr. Meow." He seemed friendly enough, but again, Ai couldn't understand a thing he said. This would continue until, one day, she spotted something rather interesting. She saw another one of these creatures following some guy around, but he was able to see it too. In fact, it looked like he was able to understand what it was saying! Was this guy like the one who saved her all those years ago? Was it the same person? She had to find out. With nothing else to do, she decided to investigate, with Mr. Meow tagging along for the ride. She trailed him from behind, doing her best to maintain as much distance as possible. This went on for about a couple hours, until the man finally seemed to notice that a teenager was following him around. He confronted her and sternly sent her away, claiming that he was doing something important. He hoped that was the end of of it, but sure enough, he found her trailing him the next day. And the day after that. Ai just wasn't taking the hint, it seemed.Having enough of this girl constantly tailing him, he finally decided to ask just why she wouldn't just do what she was told and just leave him alone. Ai simply responded by pointing at the creature that the man was walking around with, a large white wilf with a bushy mane, and she asked how he could communicate with it. Taken aback, the man began to pester Ai with even more questions. Questions like "Can you see it? How can you see it?" All that. Ai sat down and proceeded to explain the events she went through five years ago. She described how, after she was rescued, she was able to see these strange beings in various places all over Mikage-Cho, but nobody else was. She then asked the man outright, "Are you the one who rescued me?"He denied it. However, instead of sending Ai away again after all of that, he revealed the true nature of these monsters she'd been seeing. They were demons, and this man was a Devil Summoner, an individual who can communicate with and summon demons. This, understandably, shocked Ai. She didn't fully understand it, but she definitely was intrigued. Wanting to understand more about this strange power, as well as the desire to prevent anyone else having to go through what she did five years ago, Ai requested for this man to teach her to become a Devil Summoner. He refused. However, this didn't deter her. She followed him around again, much to his chagrin. Day after day, she'd ask him to take her under his wing and, each time, he refused. This went on for a couple of weeks until he finally relented. Thus, Ai's life as a Devil Summoner began. The first thing the man did was formally introduce himself. His name was Aizawa, and he was a member of the Mikage-Cho Investigation Agency, a private investigation group made up of other Devil Summoners. Due to the fact that Ai was still a minor, it was made very clear that she was only considered a "junior detective" within the agency, only getting the least dangerous jobs under some pretty heavy supervision from the other Summoners. At least they were more than willing to show her the ropes when it came to summoning and demons. She even got her own COMP, which she had installed into her phone. Now able to fully communicate with demons, she learned how to negotiate with them. The first demon she managed to forge a contract with was none other than Pixie, who she still uses to this day. She even learned what Mr. Meow's true name was: Cait Sith. Though, for some reason, he decided not to form a contract with Ai.About two years had passed, and things were going pretty well during her time as a junior Summoner. It took a lot of time, effort, and several failed attempts, but she managed to get the hang of summoning and communicating with demons. She even started to get closer with Aizawa, seeing him as a sort of father figure. She even went as far as to introduce him to her mom, which turned out to be a pretty tense meeting. To Ai, it almost seemed like the two of them had met before. After that day, her mom started acting distant, almost as though she was outright trying to avoid her own daughter. Of course, Ai had no idea where this sudden attitude change came from. She was always so kind to her, so gentle. It eventually culminated with her up and disappearing one day, without a word. At first, Ai assumed it had something to do with her mother's mysterious job, but as the hours turned into days and the days turned into weeks, it was obvious what was going on. Ai had been abandoned by her own mother. At first, Ai pretended that she wasn't bothered by what happened. Though, as time went on, she found it harder and harder to keep that facade up. Parental abandonment could only be played off for so long. Her life began to fall apart at the seams. There were days in which she wouldn't get out of bed and her eating habits took a nosedive. Her whole world was crashing down around her and it was all too much for her to bear. She certainly would have broken had it not been for Aizawa and a couple of the other Devil Summoners. They understood that she needed space, but they also knew that she couldn't wallow in despair like this. It took some time, but eventually, Ai was able to face the world again.Since then, life had gone on like usual. She considered dropping out of high school during her third year, but a joke one of the other investigators made about how one of the job requirements to work full time was a high school diploma, Ai decided to just go ahead finish school properly. Once she had her diploma, the now eighteen year old Ai was finally considered a proper Devil Summoner, and she was promoted to a full time position within the Mikage-Cho Investigation Agency. Over the four years she's worked there, her skills as a Devil Summoner have only improved.

Kind demons will prioritize the use of healing and defensive spells.
